About us and Maamigili
Stay and dive on the island of the whale shark
Shamar Guesthouse & Dive is on Maamigili in South Ari Atoll, right on the Indian Ocean and among green gardens.
The island has grown in recent years, and new houses have gone up around us. The gardens and the sea at the door are still here. The village, with supermarkets, small restaurants and a health centre, is a few minutes’ walk away.
Our dive centre, Shamar Divers, is the only PADI 5 Star Dive Center on Maamigili. The whale shark reef is ten minutes away by boat, the mantas half an hour. In between lie some of the best dive sites in South Ari Atoll, and we go out every day.
Maamigili is a local island, so you stay right in the middle of everyday Maldivian life. Our kitchen cooks Maldivian, properly spicy if you ask. If you would rather eat European, you can have that too.
Our animal housemates
You share Shamar with our cat, a few birds and the occasional gecko. If you are sensitive to animals or have an allergy, please let us know. We want you to feel at home with us.

Snorkelling with the whale shark
The trip everyone comes for. Two hours, from two people.
Traditional night fishing
After sunset you fish with hand lines from the dhoni. Then the catch goes on the grill.
Uninhabited islands
A day on a sandbank or an uninhabited island, with swimming in the lagoon.
Dolphins at sunrise
Out early on the sea to look for dolphins. Bring a camera.
Snorkelling with turtles
Calm water, a shallow reef, and turtles that don’t mind visitors.

Location
Alifu Dhaalu (South Ari) Atoll, at the southern tip of the atoll, right next to the whale shark reef.
Getting there
Its own airport (VAM), 20 minutes from Malé by domestic flight.
The village
Supermarkets, restaurants, small shops and a health centre, all within walking distance.
Beach
Bikinis are fine on the Bikini Beach in front of the house. In the village: shoulders and knees covered.
